Project Outcome Summary
Focusing on carbon management and sustainable transformation of Yunlin’s local flower industry, the “Carbon Flora” project integrates smart technology, educational practice, and community co-creation—demonstrating how universities can serve as mediators and facilitators in local climate action. The core of the project lies in assisting flower farmers in Huwei to implement smart carbon auditing systems by integrating sensors and AI technology. This enables real-time monitoring of greenhouse carbon emissions and development of carbon reduction strategies, helping farmers respond to international carbon tax policies. Students are actively involved in the auditing process and have earned international certifications such as ISO 14064 and 14067, reinforcing the link between curriculum and practical application.
On the education front, the project promotes climate literacy across age groups by connecting climate knowledge to everyday decision-making, enhancing public engagement. It also encourages agricultural waste reuse by transforming discarded lisianthus stems and orchid remnants into creative cultural products, advancing the principles of a circular economy.
Moreover, the project has established sustainable ecological education sites, including butterfly restoration zones at local elementary schools. These serve as biodiversity learning spaces where indicator species like the purple crow butterfly are monitored. Combined with low-carbon tourism and guided tours, the initiative links ecological education with community participation, fostering environmental awareness and stewardship at the local level.
