Project Outcome Summary
Since 1906, when the Dainippon Sugar Manufacturing Company established a sugar factory in Huwei, the town has gradually transformed from the small village of Wujianjhuo into a prominent hub of the sugar industry. The sugar factory not only drove agricultural and industrial development but also shaped the local social and cultural landscape. However, with industrial restructuring, the decline of the sugar industry, and urban expansion, the traditional sugar industry culture has gradually faded. In response to these challenges, this project focuses on Zhongshan Road in Huwei and its surrounding areas, proposing three key action themes:
  1. Co-Constructing Local Knowledge – Safeguarding and transforming the cultural assets of the sugar industry.
  2. Collaborative Management and Participation – Fostering cultural participation and revitalizing the local economy.
  3. Co-Learning and Performance – Enriching community cultural life and strengthening identity to promote Huwei’s diverse and sustainable development.
Under the concept of an ecomuseum, the project aims to turn the core area of Huwei’s Sugar Capital into a “living dynamic site of sugar industry culture,” with comprehensive considerations that include:
  1. Good Sugar R&D and Industrial Transformation – Promoting educational outreach related to sugarcane, the sugar industry, and local culture; facilitating the transformation of the traditional sugar industry into a cultural and creative sugar economy; developing good sugar technologies; revitalizing the local economy; and advancing cultural and tourism industries.
  2. Cultural Rooting and Translation – Serving as a research base for the history and culture of the sugar industry by cataloging the area’s cultural resources and building a digital archive system. Through exhibitions and interactive events, the project will transform the area into a dynamic public platform that showcases the history and culture of the sugar industry, drawing in visitors and making the sugar industry culture part of a shared collective memory.
